Beyond the Gaze

Media Awareness for Media Inclusivity

In 2023, I was approached by my colleague and friend Lisa Charlotte Friederich who asked if I would take over the project of directing a film that she had been working on with Greta Olson, who is a professor and scholar in Gießen (among many other things).
Greta had been working on a script for a non-commercial short film that questioned the way people interact with media and utilized the concept of „the gaze“, which was originally coined by Laura Mulvey in 1975. It quotes authors like bell hooks, Stuart Hall, Frantz Fanon and Toni Morrison to discuss ways to recognize and resist prejudiced ways of seeing and producing media.

So, „Beyond the Gaze“ came into existence through the work and passion of Greta and Lisa as Scriptwriters, Lizzy Geble as an excellent camera operator and lovely force on set, Henrike Terheyden as graphic designer, outside eye and critical thinker, Steph Krah as our sound designer, Melanie Kreitler as a calm, collected and supportive production manager and the work of many great interviewees and speakers whom I would like to thank for their trust.

Directing this film made me reflect production, trust and power relations more than ever and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn with the team.

Let me know what you think via e-mail and please visit Gretas Website for more information on the script.
